It is always best to clear it up that sciatica is neither a disease nor a disorder – it is actually a set of symptoms that could be caused by the irritation of the spinal nerve roots. It is scientifically known as sciatic neuritis. While pain is common to people suffering from the compression of these sciatic nerves, there are a lot of other symptoms that are less known to people. It has plagued people since 1451.
The sciatic nerve is the body's largest nerve. Its fibers begin at the lower parts of the lumbar vertebra, specifically the 4th and the 5th. It would then pass through below the muscle that permits lateral rotation of the thigh, which is more known as the Piriformis muscle, then to the back of the hips, then to the muscle of the buttocks or Gluteus Maximus, to the back of the thigh, to behind the knee, and ultimately down to the feet.
Usually, sciatica would only affect one side of the body. However, it would give you sharp pains that could travel from the start of the nerve just above the buttocks, down to the thighs or the legs. And because it extends down to the feet, sciatic neuritis could be felt right down to the foot.
It is not unusual for people to suffer from it by the numbness and tingling sensations on these parts. Sometimes, the numbness and weakness may worsen up to the point where you couldn't feel your foot. Sitting and standing could be problematic and very hurtful for people who suffer from sciatic neuritis, but standing from low-sitting positions could usually hurt more. Sneezing and coughing could aggravate the pain. However, laughing could also worsen the pain.
Some people could experience sciatic neuritis for a long period of time, and these conditions could worsen over time than be cured. You have to know how much is too much in sciatic neuritis, for you to know how to deal with it correctly and effectively.
You wouldn't actually deal with sciatic neuritis forever, but there are times that you would reach your pain threshold and the symptoms would make it very hard for you to move, thus affecting your everyday life. If you are suffering from it for some days now and the condition doesn't seem to be improving, you might want to consider making an appointment with a doctor. First time sufferers of sciatic neuritis who are below 20 years old and above 55 years old are also advised to go to the doctor immediately. Sciatica is dangerous for people who have cancer or had cancer, as with those who experience it along with fever, chills and back pains.
